Wanna shine? Make an outline!

I’M BACKKK!! UPDATE! So I made an outline to show the specific steps Carlos and I plan on taking for our film opening. In order to be well-prepared, our outline is essential which is why I need feedback from you guys! I wanted to mention that today in class, we got into groups of 5 and basically just shared ideas about the direction we were each heading towards our portfolio projects. I think that this was a very useful exercise because not only did it help me get feedback from other peers who are doing the same project, which means they know a little bit more about all of this, no offense, but I got critiques on scenes that I should add or take out. The main thing my peers told me to focus on was the timing of my film opening, more clearly they just wanted me to make sure all the scenes I mentioned reached 2 minutes. I explained to them that my outline only had the main scenes that were going to shown and that I’d obviously add some more on the way, but they told me to be careful with that because if I end up finishing filming and editing and my video is not 2 minutes long, then I am in trouble. So ready or not.....here it is:

To take a better look I've attached the files down below:

P.S. the red marks are recommendations from my group peers of stuff I should either add or take out.

Xoxo

Rom-Com examples as promised

I’m back!! So in my last post, I promised you guys more information about the genre Carlos and I decided to pick which of course was romantic teenage comedies (Rom-Coms), but of course, you guys already knew that since you read my last post right????

Before we dive into these case studies, I wanna go over some of the main characters that the audience, might come across while viewing these types of films. So to start with the more positive characters or in better words, the popular ones, we call them Jocks and cheerleader, while on the other side, we have the outcasts which are the Nerds and Loners. SPOILER ALERT!!!! In some cases, these films try to give a message to the audience which is that it doesn't matter which social group you are in because at the end everyone is the same which is why these films usually end with the Nerd dating the Jock or the Loner dating the Cheerleader.

  1. To All the Boys I've Loved Before
So basically, this film is about a girl named Lara Jean who I guess you can say is a loner. Lara Jean keeps her love letters in a box, one for every boy she's ever loved-- five in all. The Story takes a plot twist as her letters get mailed to all the boys the letters were for and Lara Jeans life changes. Don’t worry, it's not all that bad because she ends up making a deal with the most popular guy in school and of course a jock named Peter Kavinsky. The deal is basically that they had to pretend to be dating so that people who got the letters thought it was a joke and so that Peter’s popular girlfriend would get jealous. Little did both of them know that they were not pretending anymore, but more clearly were falling in love.
This is the trailer for those interested:

2. The Kissing Booth

Onto the next one film which is The Kissing Booth. So in this film, there is a nerd/loner named Elle Evans, who has only one friend named Lee Flynn. Elle is lowkey in love with Lee’s older brother named Noah, but Elle knew it was wrong since it violated her and Lee’s friendship pact. Later on, throughout the movie, Elle and Lee decide to run a kissing booth at her high school's Spring Carnival, when she finds herself unexpectedly kissing the popular jock and of course her big-time crush Noah. Elle's life completely changed as she must decide whether to follow the rules and be with Noah or follow her heart and ruin her friendship with Lee.

Catching the Fish

Welcome back, guys!! UPDATE TIME! For starters, my partner Carlos and I are having a tough time deciding which genre to do, horror or drama. If you have no idea what I am talking about then you might wanna check my previous posts that talk about all the research I did on drama and if you guys want to know more about horror then let me know so I can give you a link to Carlos’s website which includes all the research about horror.
Anyway, Carlos and I have been leaning a little more towards drama, more specifically romantic teenage comedies as we believe we can come up with some great ideas.  The reason we are thinking about sticking with romantic teenage comedies or how teenagers like to call it “Teen Rom-Coms”  is because we believe those are the movies that are mostly trending on many apps nowadays like for example, Netflix. Netflix has started to release a lot of original films like  “To all the boys I've loved before” and “The Kissing Booth” which of course targets their main audience, teenagers, but we will talk more about those films in my next post. So why has Netflix started to release more originals? Well, by releasing more of their own films, “Netflix will be less dependent on the studios for user retention” and who better than Netflix to release new films since they clearly have the sources to know what their users want, which in this case is…. TEEN ROM-COMS!

To mention other movie sites, Hulu and Amazon are a perfect example as well as they release thousand of romantic comedies as well. To talk a little more about Hulu, this website not only releases original films like Netflix, but it also shows Current Episodes, whereas Netflix users have to wait a while for a whole season to come out.

So as you guys can see I have done a bunch of research on not just romantic teenage comedies, but on what is trending these days so that we know what to focus on and so we are more successful. You know what they say, in order to catch a fish, you have to cheat a little and put some bait on the hook ;)

For more information about other Rom-Coms, I found a really good slideshow that you guys should check out:

Dark Souls

Welcome back, guys! I'm excited to inform all of you about a new project. For any of those, who are huge music fans, you definitely want to stick around. So about 2 weeks ago, my class was assigned an exciting, but challenging project about a music campaign. There were so many steps that had to be taken for our music campaign to be a success like for example, research on certain bands (Imagine dragons/Maroon 5) that were within our genre, which in this case was rock. The song we had to present was “Many Shades of Black” by the Raconteurs, which I have to say was a pretty good song. To give you a better understanding of what we had to do, we were basically the bands’ promoters as we had to pretend that our band was new and was trying to become a huge hit. The research we conducted from Imagine Dragons and Maroon 5 really inspired great marketing ideas, such as a unique one that Imagine Dragons came up with, which was an arcade day. Before we get ahead of ourselves, I forgot to mention that we had to come up with a name for our band that would really catch out target audiences attention ( male and female from the middle class, ages 16 to mid- 30s), so we went with Dark Souls.

We knew that in order to really get out band out there we had to use social media as it is a key factor in rock. The companies we mostly focused on was, Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter as they are the most popular social media sites used worldwide. Using these popular companies would come as a huge benefit to our campaign because not only is it a great way to market our merchandise(shirts/posters), but it is a good way to interact with the fans as we can give them updates about where we are and what we are doing and they can give us feedback on what they are excited for. Reaching out to some bands or music festivals plays a big role in our campaign as well as it will help the band get recognized and get some publicity. Not to mentions that we plan on going a different round with our younger audience which is why we decided to create our own video game as well. The video game is a little like temple run, but in this case, the players can choose one of the band members and basically they are running away from their girlfriend as that is what the song we want to distribute is about. Here's a sneak peek.

For the most part, our distribution will consist of streaming through music apps such as Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, and Soundcloud, as that is what I learned is what most people are on these days. Not to mention, the most popular worldwide streaming app, Youtube. Lastly, we created a well- organized website, http://cms.darksoulrock-com.webnode.com/, which is easy for fans to navigate through as they are learning about the band. The website will not only feature merchandise that people can wear to concerts, but also a schedule with the dates and locations for our next tours. The website is definitely crucial in our campaign as it allows the band to form relationships with their fans and get feedback from them.

To sum things up, I can definitely, say that I learned a lot from this project. This project not only taught me a number of strategies to get my band well-known, but it also taught me what steps to take for my portfolio project. The main things to remember is to use social media to our advantage and to know what fans like and do not like. We have to realize that becoming a huge hit is not an easy thing to do without the help of other bands and companies. Putting ourselves in the shoes of our fans allows some insight on what they want which is to form a type of relationship with the artists or band. Overall, this project helped me manage my time and gain more experience with marketing and editing as a whole.

Stay tuned for upcoming news!
